Numb

I encountered Kevin Carter's life story and his 1994 Pulitzer Prize winning photograph for the first time last night.

I have never been so swiftly and strongly affected by a visual in my life. I have no respectful or appropriate way of processing such an image. I simply laid on the couch and cried.

Grammar is the least area of confusion for me when it comes to affected vs. effected.

  1. I had the exact same experience.....stunned for days after. Two Fotofest's ago, Diverse Works had an installation by an artist about Kevin Carter's life and "the incident". They had the installation set up in the very large room. All of the walls were painted flat black. There were no lights. In the middle of the room was a large black box - the size of a room. You walked into this black large space, see this large black box/room in the middle and I started walking around it. I found a small doorway at the back and walked in. There was a movie screen inside and I happened to come just as the movie was beginning. It started with a backwards countdown with just white numbers in the center of a totally black screen. Then came a still photo sequence of the life of Kevin Carter - including the photo of the child. Inside the black room were three benches for sitting. I could not move when it was over. I was so angry, I hated art and I could not grasp the inhumanity. The presentation of this story has forever changed the way I think about photography.

I heard there is a movie out there about this.....I haven't seen it. What and where did you encounter it?
