South Coast Winery - Rolling Hills Syrah 2005

My favorite winery on our Temecula Valley tour was South Coast Winery. Of the six or so wines of their large offering that I tasted, the Rolling Hills Syrah was my favorite. Now, having tasted the bottle of it I had brought back home, I am pleased to know it was on par with my memory of it which I feared to have been blurred by the romance of the vineyard touring experience.

This is a bit of middle of the road wine in the developing distinction between old world and Australian syrahs. The wine has the fruit and volume up front like a shiraz but enough elegance and dryness on the back end to match a french syrah. It has enough wateriness to make it quaffable to fringe wine drinkers, enough dynamic volume for big wine lovers to not grumble, and even enough sophistication to please many seasoned snobs. All this to say that I don't know that this is a great wine in the competitive sense, as much as it is a great wine to share with friends because it can please so many palates.
